Are Home Schooling Programs Online Suitable for You?
There are lots of benefits of home schooling to take advantage of, that much is certain. But not everyone who takes a home schooling program online takes it because they want to. Sometimes, they go the road of home schooling because they don’t have a choice.
What may very well be a common misconception among home school advocates is that all children who adhere to the program do so either because they want to, or because their parents want them to. This fallacy has its roots in the many benefits of home schooling – the potential gains of those who undergo a home schooling program online are so great that it leads supporters of home education to believe that everyone under the program looks to take advantage of these benefits.
Most of these advocates are so wrapped up in home schooling’s perks that they fail to realize necessity is as big a factor in children and parents settling on home schooling as much as convenience, effectiveness, and matters of time are.
Promising as it is, the style of home schooling isn’t for everyone.
Lots of kids prefer to learn in a classroom with their peers as opposed to being taught one-on-one by their parents, finding the former a more comfortable and engaging environment. Some may enjoy the deadlines set by the traditional school’s stringent academic programs because these restrictions challenge them to get going, unlike home schooling where they can easily lose their drive just by knowing that they are free to progress at a snail’s pace. Others may even be incapable of learning on their own, needing the rush of competition with a select group to give them reason to study.
For these people, the benefits of home schooling aren’t so much benefits as they are drawbacks. Yet for some reason or another, they are forced to veer away from the familiar school environment and take on the less conventional alternative home schooling programs online present. Not because they want to, but because they have to.
Possible reasons include ailments that may confine them to their homes, financial crises that cause them to withdraw from school, lifestyles that involve a lot of travel, and being deemed unqualified to enroll in any public or private school, among others. Though they prefer the conventional school’s approach to the style of home schooling, no school could or would have them.
There is little doubt that home schooling programs online have their advantages and that a good number of students greatly benefit from them, but to say that every family that settled on it and everyone who tried it did so because of its promise is a big mistake. Though home schooling may be a godsend to many, it’s still best to maintain a little perspective.
